Optyse Lens Free
Ophthalmoscope
The Optyse Lens Free
Ophthalmoscope (Oasis Medical, Inc.,
Glendora, CA) provides a rapid and
clear view of the retina and requires no
lens adjustments. The instrument is
capable of viewing the posterior pole,
disc, and macula with a clear enough
image to detect small lesions. The magnification
and field are comparable to a
standard direct ophthalmoscope.
Optyse is a light weight, pen-sized device that can be carried in a pocket
and operates with two triple-A batteries.
MaculaTester
Sabina Technology, LLP (San Juan, Puerto
Rico), released the MaculaTester, a software
application for the early diagnosis and monitoring
of macular diseases, including agerelated
macular degeneration (AMD). The
electronic test is designed to run on portable
touch-screen electronic devices. According
to company literature, the MaculaTester
(patent pending) is currently available for the
iPhone and iPod Touch (both by Apple, Inc.,
Cupertino, CA) and will be available for
other platforms (including the iPad) in the
near future. The MaculaTester allows users to
record the area of distortion, save a date-and
time-stamped image, and compare the
image to previous ones with a retina specialist. The free “push notification”
feature reminds users to perform the test at regular intervals.
